Know Your Knowledge Base

Every organization is more than the sum of its parts. Unfortunately, the total knowledge contained within an organization is not always reflected by the content of the records and documents in its information architecture. For example, an individual may have knowledge about a particular topic that has not been officially documented, despite its value to the organization as a whole. This means that potentially critical information may remain hidden within an organization, unsearchable (and therefore unusable) to both information managers and end-users.

Cogniva’s ISIS Enterprise Suite solves this problem with its “Knowledge Map” feature. Knowledge mapping provides a simple and dynamic method for linking individuals within an organization to its underlying knowledge base. With the ISIS Classifier, users can link specific topics and facets to knowledgeable individuals in an organization with semantic descriptions, regardless of whether or not this connection has been officially documented in their information base. ISIS can then perform searches that provide a list of people who are knowledgeable about the searched subject, greatly enhancing an organization’s search-and-retrieval capacity. This provides ISIS with the ability to perform searches that not only provide results on what unstructured information (e.g. documents, email) is linked to a specific metadata set, but also provide a list of people who are knowledgeable about the subject.

Knowledge mapping can help an information architecture reach its full potential by bridging the gap between its documented information base and the individuals within its parent organization — a comprehensive approach to making sure an information architecture truly reflects the organization it serves.
